February 24, 2007 – Tampa, Florida – St. Pete Times Forum

I’ve been geared up to see The Blue Man Group for years.  Being a playwright, I started hearing the buzz about these guys back in the 80’s from several of my Theatre connections.  Then The Blue Man Group was featured on Intel’s innovative and entertaining commercials on TV.  In 2003, Lava Records sent me a CD of The Complex to review by The Blue Man Group.  We played that CD so much in the office that we wore it out and had to go out buy another copy.  It’s that good.  I’d highly recommend it as a part of your CD collection.  But, I’ve got to say that seeing them perform live is even more amazing.  It is a visual feast for the eyes and your soul.  It’s a high that is difficult to describe even though we’re used to being in the pit photographing concert after concert.  They don’t just do great music.  They do great Theatre.  If they are coming to a city near you I suggest you call Ticketmaster and get the best tickets you can get.  It’s too much fun and it is great show for all ages.

I can’t wait until they have their permanent show here in Orlando at Universal Studios,   I’ll definitely be a regular at the show.

Jeff Barnes review of Blue Man Group Performing in Orlando at Amway Arena

How to be a Megastar 2.0

In case you are unfamiliar with the Blue Man Group, they are about everything but the blues.  Imagine three quizzical looking, non-speaking, bald, shiny blue- skinned men in matching black suits, and they like to bang on stuff. They also have an uncanny ability to catch things in their mouth.

The main concept of How to Be a Megastar  is a step-by-step self help program sold on a Ronco-like infomercial that promises to show buyers how to become rock stars by mastering the essential rock movements, including the pelvic thrust, the basic head bob, and the one-armed fist pump.

As the show continues, more sophisticated concepts are revealed. The acknowledgement of histories great rock icons, and mastering glam rock makeup.

The Blue Men put on a spectacular show by unleashing an array of sounds, lights, and animated videos, and it is all perfectly synchronized.

Blues Traverler @ HOB
Review by Hillary Williams - Orlando Florida Guide

The Blues Travelers opened with the song Devil Went Down to Georgia from the Charlie Daniels Band. An interesting choice ... certainly, a high energy song but, why not one of their own? None the less, Chan Kinchla, one of the few original members of the band, played a great riff on his guitar and led them into a bands original. John Popper seems to have fabulous lungs for all the racing harmonica sounds especially considering he finishes a cigarette at the opening of the set. The harmonica had special buttons he could push to change the sound during the songs. His singing is perfectly suited for the blues but is stronger in some songs than others. As the numbers went on he added a bit more of an "island" sound to make his voice more distinctive. Although, a few songs had less interesting melodies than others, they would build to a crescendo with more great guitar riffs. The band played a couple songs off their new cd, Bastardos and gave fans a taste of a different sound for them as well, more of the same. The crowd was not the kind to howl and scream in-between numbers but, they happily sang along each song and most likely would have preferred to have enjoyed it from their lawn chairs.

Power Movement Project @ The Social
Review by Hillary Williams - Orlando Florida Guide

May 10, 2006

Power Management Project was the first band to kick off the evening of the 10th at the Social. At first I thought I knew what sound I was going to get from them, a heavy rock/rap. But surprisingly, Power Management rocks with its solid beats as well  very good playing from both the guitar player and the base player. Brooke, the lead singer adds a nice sound. He is obviously influenced by rap and island sounds sometimes talk singing 10 words a second. He creates an interesting mix of sounds and I would think could work on his range and come up with more spice to the vocals. Both Brooke and Brian ,the guitarist, are original members starting up 6 years ago. I got to meet both of them and think they are the kind of guys that you want to make it in music. They were nice enough to offer me a cd of their earlier works using a female vocalist. I had a chance to give a listen and would hope that they don't look back but keep it interesting, keep it tight and don't hide behind baggy clothing!

Bob Dylan in Orlando
Tues May 9, 2006

In case anyone missed it, a legend passed through Orlando tonight with less water cooler buzz than a local fire or hurricane prediction.

Bob Dylan performed live at the TD Waterhouse / Centroplex arena with a notable opening performance by Merle Haggard. The unlikely pairing of these two former-giants drew a mixed crowd spanning 4 generations ... literally from pimple faced teens through older-than-Keith-Richards grandparents. It's rare to experience such a generation range, but then we're talking Bob Dylan.

It wouldn't be right to neglect the surprisingly magic moments delivered by Merle Haggard and his band. By the reaction of the crowd, one might guess this was a Merle Haggard audience. The simpler answer is that Merle just delivered a very universal mix of music ... not too much "twang", not too much croon. I actually found my foot stomping along a couple times despite not being a fan of his genre.  I'd see him again if the lineup was right. And judging by the standing ovations (that's plural, for the record), so would most of the crowd.

Bob Dylan, on the other hand, left me struggling. I came to see the legend that he is. I grew up listening to Dylan, and it would take more than two hands to count all the songs I love from him over the years. But tonight I would not witness the Bob Dylan I know.

Perhaps the staunchest Dylan fan would disagree. They were there ... I even found one in the beverage line and asked his opinion. He summed it all up by saying, "I've been to over 25 Dylan concerts and learned one thing ... you never know what to expect!"  I suppose that is a fitting summation.  I came expecting to experience what my idea of Bob Dylan is and was ... I scarcely recognized what I heard.

The problem is that Dylan is an icon and will always be a legend. His accomplishments have earned enough respect to last another 5 generations. The dilemma is that I struggle reconciling my deep respect for his Majesty with the performance I saw in Orlando. If you've never seen Bob Dylan before, I apologize for Tuesday's performance. If you have seen Bob Dylan before, perhaps his memory is best left intact.  It seems apparent, from this show anyway, The-Times-They-Are-A-Changin, and the Tambourine Man's best days might well be past.

RICKY MARTIN REVIEW by KAT COFFIN - OFG

The Bob Carr Performing Arts Center was packed for Ricky Martin’s concert Wednesday night. Fans waiting in the lobby before the show were vying to see who the biggest Ricky fan was by testing each other on who knew the most trivia from his Menudo days; it was a multi-way tie. As the concert time drew nearer, the screaming and chanting “Ricky” grew to a frenzied pace. Finally, the opening notes to “Till I Get to You” began, the curtain dropped, and the object of their adoration appeared.

For the next two hours, the charismatic Martin wowed the audience with his rhythmic music, dancing and martial arts moves, every time he shook his hips, screams erupted from the audience.

His latest CD “Life” was represented well with “I Don't Care,” “This Is Good,” and “Drop It On Me,” among others.  Sprinkled throughout the night were many popular songs from his varied career, including “Private Emotion,” “Fuego Contra Fuego” and “Loaded.”

The song “She Bangs” was a true highlight of the evening, featuring a very talented flamenco dancer in a flowing white gown.

The audience performed well with their expected gestures during “Por Arriba, Por Abajo” and their singing parts in “Un Dos Tres Maria.”

During the course of the show, Martin changed outfits several times, but one thing did not waver, his ear to ear grin. Martin appeared to be having just as good a time as the audience members. At one point, an over-eager fan rushed onto the stage to hug her idol, as he continued to sing with her wrapped tightly around him until security managed to pry her loose and send her on her way.

The stage show itself was impressive with the ten piece band and eclectic light show.  There were screens showing a myriad of clips featuring dancers, more lights, and even anime.

The multi-cultural show included something for everyone as no one left disappointed.
