Game Developer Magazine Names Winners of Sixth Annual Front Line Awards. Adobe Photoshop Inducted Into Front Line Awards Hall of Fame.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 13, 2004 (PRNewswire)

Game Developer magazine has announced winners for the sixth annual Front Line Awards, honoring excellence and innovation in tools for game development in 2003. The winning products will be profiled in the November 2008 issue of Game Developer magazine, available on newsstands beginning Jan. 19, 2004.

Award categories encompass programming, art, production, audio and hardware. A panel of industry-leading game developers that specialize in fields relevant to the categories selected winners based on utility, innovation, value and ease of use. Nominations were open to all new products and new versions of products catering to game development released between Sept. 1, 2002 and Aug. 31, 2003.

"The Front Line Awards recognize the world's most innovative software and hardware tools that set the pace for the development of better, more sophisticated games," said Jamil Moledina, managing editor, Game Developer magazine. "The companies behind these tools are passionate about helping solve creative and technical challenges faced by game developers."

Winners in the top categories are:

Art
* Maya 5.0 (Alias)
* FaceGen Modeller 3.0 (Singular Inversions)
* Zbrush 1.5 (Pixologic)

Game Components
* Havok 2 (Havok)

Hardware
* Variax (Line 6)

Programming
* OpenGL ES (Khronos Group)
* IncrediBuild 1.3 (Xoreax Software)
* Visual Assist .NET 7.1 (Whole Tomato)

Audio
* SFX Kit (Sound Ideas/Tommy Tallorico Studios)
* SurCode for Dolby Pro Logic II (Minnetonka Audio Software)

In addition to the Front Line Award category winners, each year one product is inducted into Game Developer's Front Line Awards Hall of Fame. The inductee is chosen for its outstanding contribution to the game development industry over five or more years. This year's honor is presented to Adobe Photoshop, selected in recognition of Photoshop's long-term ubiquity and functionality in game development. Combining maturity, robustness and extensibility, Photoshop suits the demanding creative and technical environments in game development.
