These students first competed in one of three regional competitions. Each region was permitted to send the Academy as many as three films in each of the four categories. The finalist films were then screened and voted on by Academy members to select the winners.

The Honorary Foreign Film winner, who received a $1,000 cash grant, was selected from a pool of 38 entries from 25 countries. This is the first time a student from Germany's University of Hamburg has won this award.

Film Honored with Awards for Best Actress and Best Screenplay At this Year's Cannes Film Festival

Miramax to Distribute in the United States

NEW YORK, May 25 (PRNewswire) -- Miramax Films has acquired the US distribution rights to one of the most well received competition films at this year's Cannes Film Festival, "The Barbarian Invasions" ("Les Invasions Barbares"), directed and written by Denys Arcand and starring Remy Girard, Stephane Rousseau, Marie-Josee Croze and Louise Portal, it was announced today by Miramax executive vice president of acquisitions and co-productions Agnes Mentre. The French language film is produced by Denise Robert and Daniel Louis, from Cinemaginaire, and co-produced by Fabienne Vonier, from Pyramide. Miramax acquired the rights from Flach Pyramide International (FPI).

A sequel to the popular 1986 film "Decline of the American Empire," "The Barbarian Invasions" centers on a man who spends the last days of his life making peace with his life and exploring the ties that bind family and friends.

"We are pleased to have been able to acquire such a wonderful film, which the entire acquisitions team loved, from the renowned company FPI," said Agnes Mentre. "It is so rare to find a movie that balances emotion and comedy and also contains profound statements about the important subjects of our lives. Because of these elements, we believe this film will be accessible to a wide audience."

"Denys Arcand is a great filmmaker whose work stood out high above the rest of the films at this year's Cannes Film Festival," said Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein. "The film is full of humanity and shows a fascinating perspective on friendship and family. We are pleased to be in business with Denys, Denise, and Daniel."

"The film was one of the hottest titles at the festival and I'm very proud that Miramax has decided to acquire it," said Eric Lagesse, FPI head of sales. "I'm confident that in the hands of Miramax, the film will be a great success in the US. Agnes, Maeva and I have been trying to work together for quite a long time and I'm glad that it finally worked out on this particular movie."

Maeva Gatineau, UK based vice president of acquisitions, and Agnes Mentre brought the film into Miramax.

Charles Layton, executive vice president, office of the co-chairman, and Mentre negotiated on behalf of Miramax. Eric Lagesse negotiated on behalf of FPI.
