RottenTomatoes.com Announces the 5th Annual Tomato Awards Featuring 2003's Best and Worst Reviewed Films EMERYVILLE, Calif., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ - RottenTomatoes.com, the industry's most comprehensive provider of film review surveys, is proud to announce the 5th Annual Tomato Awards. Based on the award-winning Tomatometer(SM) system of measuring a movie's approval rating among accredited film critics, the RT Awards recognizes the year's best and worst reviewed movies. 2003's best reviewed film was also the year's biggest blockbuster. Swimming past the competition into first place, Disney/Pixar's "Finding Nemo" took top honors as The Tomato Awards' Fresh Pick of the Year with an astounding 99% Tomatometer(SM) Fresh Rating. "To determine the winner, we factored in the number of reviews a movie garnered, as well as using its Tomatometer score," stated Senh Duong, Rotten Tomatoes' COO and founder. "In continuing the tradition of garnering overwhelming praise from critics, the Pixar team relied on excellent storytelling abilities and witty humor to create a picture that topped such critical heavyweights as 'Return of the King' and 'Lost in Translation.'" Of note, three of the films in 2003's Top 10 are documentaries: "Spellbound," "Capturing the Friedmans," and "Winged Migration." The Tomato Awards for the Top 10 Best Reviewed Films of 2003 go to:
1. Finding Nemo (Fresh Pick of the Year) 2003 also had its share of films that were panned by the critics. "The Tomatometer is useful in that it allows you to see the complete critical reaction to a movie quickly and easily," said Senh Duong. "It's a double-edged blade, and the recognition is of a dubious nature for those films that were not well-received." For 2003, the Rotten Pick of the Year went to the Martin Brest flick "Gigli," starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, with a Tomatometer(SM) score of 7%. Senh Duong noted, "Martin Brest ('Scent of a Woman,' 'Midnight Run') is a good director, but frankly, this experimental romantic comedy blew up in his face."
1. Gigli (Rotten Pick of the Year) ABOUT THE TOMATO AWARDS The Tomato Awards recognizes the year's best and worst reviewed movies by performing a comprehensive survey of accredited film critics.
