HOLLYWOOD
(June 24, 2003) - Hip-Hop sensation 50 Cent continued his platinum rampage
to superstardom as he claimed both Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Best New
Artist categories during the 3rd ANNUAL BET AWARDS at Hollywood's Kodak
Theatre. James Brown, "The Godfather of Soul," and basketball
legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson also took center stage as they
were awarded BET's Lifetime Achievement and Humanitarian Awards respectively
in front of a capacity crowd of over 3,000 fans and members of the entertainment
world's elite.
B2K
again reigned supreme for the second straight year in the hotly-contested
Viewers' Choice Award, which was chosen on-line via BET.com. Voting for
the coveted crown continued until midway through the live telecast. The
title of Best Group didn't escape the B2K magic either as the super boy-group
walked away with that recognition as well.
The
star-studded affair also showed that once is not always enough for other
artists as three female winners from last year again claimed BET trophies
in 2003 - Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott as Best Female Hip-Hop
Artist; Yolanda Adams as Best Gospel Artist; and India.Arie as Best Female
R&B Artist. And just as he has done with the Los Angeles Lakers in
seasons past, Kobe Bryant pulled a back-to-back title grab by winning
Best Male Athlete for the second consecutive year.
BET's
yearly celebration of superlative performances in music, sports and acting
proved fertile ground for first-time winners as the collaboration between
the sultry Erykah Badu and hip-hop lyricist Common took home Video of
the Year for their pairing on "Love of My Life"; Queen Latifah
earned Best Female Actress; newcomer Derek Luke was tabbed Best Male Actor
for his acting debut in "Antoine Fisher;" tennis superstar Serena
Williams picked up Best Female Athlete; and the incomparable Snoop Dogg
picked up his first-ever BET Award for Best Collaboration on his project
featuring Pharrell entitled "Beautiful." The battle for Best
Male R&B Artist resulted in a tie between soulful crooners R. Kelly
and Jaheim.
