American Hi-fi at the TD Waterhouse Centre
July
2, 2003
American Hi-Fi proved to be a gutsy group Thursday night. They seemed
a little out of place in the T.D. Waterhouse Center with their high energy
pop-punk style, but they never let the size of the venue or the lack of
people standing inside intimidate them.
Their sound was true and clear and the few people who took the time to
watch the group were treated to a show. They encouraged people to sing
along to their radio hit Flavor of the Weak and bounced around
the stage, following up with the title track from their new album The
Art of Losing. The song features a terribly catchy riff, though
some of the lyrics might have caused the parents in the crowd to clap
their hands over kids ears.
The
group appeared unassuming, playing with virtually no stage set other than
strictly their instruments, but ppeared to have a great time throughout
their short set. Their Breakup Song featured references to
some classic bands
and songs (My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies, Back in Black)- that is, if
you paid enough attention to catch it.
One crowd member behind me was too busy comparing the band to old Green
Day to notice. The band seemed to have fun with the little bit of crowd
response. One of the highlights of their set came when they performed
a great cover of Cheap Tricks Surrender. Not only was
the
cover dead-on, they had a great time with the song and some of the crowd
that wasnt interested before quickly paid some notice to the young
guys on stage.
Overall, American Hi-Fi put on a great, fun performance that was unfortunately
missed by the majority of the crowd.
