Wood July
4, 2003 OFG: What's the name of your new album? DW: The album is called Second Face, First single is called "When the lights go out" and it comes out July 22nd. OFG: What's the biggest difference being a solo artist as compared to when you were in New Kids On The Block? DW: It's kinda, kinda like a separate that was like a whole separate person, you know that did that because it was the type of thing where I was kinda a lot of times I felt I was just along for the ride and this is me writing and producing and performing and it's you know it's 100 percent me so if I'm playing in front of like 10 people it's 100 times more fulfilling than anything I ever did in the group. OFG: How long did it take you to produce "Second Face"? DW:
It's been in the works for about 3 years, I recorded about 30 songs and
there's 18 songs on the record. So you know it took a while to kinda figure
out what I wanted to do and to experiment with writing Because I never
really OFG: The tour your on now how long is it going to last? DW:
As long as it takes right now were booked until the end of July and were
already getting dates for August so were just going to promote this thing
into the ground. The main thing for me now is for people to hear the record
and OFG: What's your favorite song off the album: DW: Probably "Home". OFG: What's the song about? DW:
I wrote it after my Mom passed away, she had Breast cancer it just for
me you know learning how to deal with it and also learning how to hold
onto the memories instead of dwelling on the fact she's gone you know
learning how to OFG: We're both from Massachusetts, what's it like for you when you run into someone from back home when your on the road and what kind of memories does that bring back for you? DW:
Man, even like when I saw you and heard you talk and that guy Brian who's
also from Boston, it's like there's something about it, I've never seen
it with any other state or city or anything its just automatically like
brothers OFG: What's the biggest change from when you first got into the Music business with your old group to now? DW: Well you know for me its the Internet and all the outlets you have to promote your albums is a change. But for me getting back into it things have changed but everything is still the same so for me it kinda stinks because I know so much about the business no one can get anything by me so it's like I'm involved in everything in the business side that my creative side and everything and before I wasn't. So now it's seeing the whole business side up front its like that has changed that has kinda changed a lot and I had to learn things that are happening with your royalties and everything so I think more than anything the bottom line with the music business is if you have a good record that's the bottom line you gotta come with some good product and you know today I'm driving down listening to John Lennon and it stands the test of time and that's what I strive to try and do something maybe 100th as good as that. OFG: Speaking of John Lennon, who are some of your musical influences and artists that inspired you and made you want to be a musician? DW:
The Beatles, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith even The J. Geils
Band and stuff like Journey that I grew up listening to and stuff I saw
coming out of Boston and even The Dave Matthews Band, I'm definitely into
the stuff OFG: The other day the RIAA announced they are going to start suing Individual users who download music from File Sharing servers like Kazaa. As an artist what's your feeling on this? DW: It is a difficult subject because for me I don't mind it because I think its a way to promote your record and a true fan is gonna go buy the record to get the liner notes and you know maybe they can't get everything off the Internet. But then I also think about maybe one of the guys that wrote on my record you know and they're not an artist and there not making the money you know I'm making from doing shows and all that stuff. I can see how it can frustrate someone like that but for a big artist who's making a lot of money I don't see where the complaining comes from like I didn't understand where Metallica was coming from you know because they write their own songs and they do everything and who are they sticking up for? Their rich you know and it's a way to promote your records. People are downloading some of my stuff that's out there and everything and I just believe if the record is good people will buy it. OFG: Are there any venues that are your favorite to play in? DW: Some of the clubs I can't wait to get back to in Boston, I'm going to play at the House of Blues up there. Its more the cities I kinda don't care where I'm playing its more getting to the cities like Chicago and Detroit and some of the cities I haven't been to in a while and the good music cities like Los Angeles, I can't wait to get to those cities. OFG: Danny, thank you and we wish you much success. DW: Thank you. Danny
