Elocation:

When Default singer Dallas Smith was flipping through the dictionary,
the word "elocation" caught his eye suggesting the perfect title
for the band's second album. "Elocation describes exactly how we
felt over the last couple of years," Smith says.
The road was Default's residence for almost two years after the release
of their 2001 TVT Records debut, The Fallout. The band's intensive touring
schedule (400 gigs plus) and the stunning songcraft of that album saw
The Fallout attain platinum status in both Canada and the U.S., with total
international sales in the 1.2 million range. The track "Wasting
My Time" became a huge Top 40 crossover hit, while subsequent singles
"Deny," "Live A Lie" and "Sick & Tired"
drove the band to A 2002 Juno Award for Best New Rock Group, a Billboard
Award nomination, and an appearance on The Tonight Show among other memorable
highlights.
The legions of Default fans will be pleased to know that while Elocation
looks deeply into the band's two years of growth away from home, it still
maintains and highlights the band's knack of uniting trademark harmony
and thought provoking lyrics to its uncompromising old school bonecrushing
musicianship. From the opening assault of "Who Followed Who"
and "Throw It All Away" through the anthemic first single "Taking
My Life Away" (already racing up rock radio charts) and the atmospheric
ballads "Made To Lie" and "All She Wrote," Default
demonstrate a sonic sweep duplicated by very few peers. "This album
has flavors of the old and a couple of new flavors we learned from the
road," explains guitarist Jeremy James Hora. "We all have different
favorite styles, and that brings an eclectic background into our writing,"
adds drummer Danny Craig. "That makes for a more interesting album."
Default's refreshing versatility was enhanced by their use of three ace
producers. The bulk of Elocation was produced by Rick Parasher (Pearl
Jam, Alice In Chains) in Seattle, while Butch Walker (Sevendust) and Nickelback
mainman Chad Kroeger, a key early booster, chimed in on three other cuts.
"Each producer has a different way of getting sounds and recording
songs," notes bassist Dave Benedict. "That was cool as it puts
a different twist on the album."
Smith may have been a vocal novice when Default formed four years ago,
but he is now at the top of his game. For proof, check out his incendiary
cover of Jeff Buckley's "Cruel," with Dallas turning in a performance
Robert Plant would be proud to claim. Comrades Craig, Hora and Benedict
similarly rock out with both power and finesse, testimony to the rewards
of all that road work. Afterall laughs Smith, "When you play every
night, you're not supposed to get worse!"
