Orlando
Florida Guide Interview with Theo and Tom of Gob at Hard Rock Live in
Orlando, FL.
July
19, 2003
GOB:
Hi, I'm Tom and I play guitar and sing too.
GOB:
I'm Theo and I play guitar and sing sometimes too.
OFG:
How did you come up with the name Gob?
Tom:
Theo and I went bowling one time and I took a bowling ball and spit in
one of the holes and Theo picked up the bowling ball and threw a gutter
ball and he went, "Ew somebody gobbed in this ball," and he
went, "that's it that's the name."
OFG:
And that's how you came up with the name of the band?
Theo:
Pretty much.
OFG:
What kind of genre would you say your music is?
Tom:
Psychedelic acid (Tom and Theo laugh)
Theo:
Just rock I guess.
Tom:
They call it fun punk in Japan.
OFG:
What are some of your memorable pranks you've played?
Tom:
Last night there was a TNT detonator thing like a phony one and I brought
it on stage and went 1-2-3-4 and wanted it to detonate at the beginning
of the song but they thought I was trying to blow them up.
Theo:
The same one that Wily E. Coyote would use in the Roadrunner cartoon.
Tom:
So Theo smashed it with his guitar and detonated the detonator.
OFG:
How did you come up with the title "Foot In Mouth Disease" (Gob's
latest CD).
Tom:
Well, certain members of our group put their foot in their mouth all the
time and that's sort of were it came from. Almost like half foot in the
mouth; some sort of disease and that's Theo right there. (Everyone starts
laughing.)
Theo:
We like to play on words a little bit. There was like a disease at the
airport and I always get it wrong, I always think it's hoof and mouth
disease - something like that and we made a joke about it one time I think
and we said lets put our feet -- everyone puts their foot in their mouth
every once in a while and everyone can relate to it.
OFG:
What was involved in making the DVD "Give Up The Grudge" and
how did you get the people to line up like they did?
Theo:
Well, it was easy. They're in uniform and there like conservative and
they obey rules, so it's easy to get them to follow. (Laughs) Now with
the punkers it was hard to wrangle them.
OFG:
Why was it hard to wrangle them?
Theo:
They just don't listen to you.
Tom:
They're rebellious.
OFG:
Where did you shoot the video?
Tom:
In Toronto.
Theo:
In the park where the Pope played. TORONTO, they call it the Pope park.
OFG:
How long did it take to film it?
Tom:
One day. Well, actually two days, but we were only there for one day.
OFG:
You had a couple of songs on (EA Sports) NHL 2003. How did EA Sports go
about picking the songs and how involved was the band in this process?
Theo:
They got to hear some songs for a demo and stuff and they were really
excited about certain songs and one of the songs is an exclusive song
that they got and it ultimately ended up on one of our EPs. They actively
wanted us involved in creating some characters and Tom took some digital
photos of us so they could make some hockey characters out of us.
OFG:
Who are some of your favorite NHL players?
Tom:
Markus Naslund number 19 he's really good.
Theo:
There's a ton of good players. The list is endless. Everyone plays hockey
in Canada.
OFG:
What are some of your favorite video games?
Tom:
I like a lot of old school games like Alligator action and Grand Theft
Auto.
OFG:
Did you go see Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines?
Theo:
It was shitty wasn't it?
OFG:
Oh, I thought it kicked ass. They had one scene where they destroyed about
100 cars.
Theo:
The action was cool, but, James Cameron, who directed the first two Terminator
movies had his own style and it's not in that third one and the action
and acting was not as good.
OFG:
Well, I thought Claire Danes did a great job of acting.
Tom:
Well, she's the only person who's actually an actor. The other guy it's
like who the fuck is that guy? He's supposed to be John Connor? They should
have gotten the guy who played him in the second Terminator movie. He's
old enough to play him. He would have been much better.
OFG:
I agree. Maybe he wanted too much money for the role. The girl who played
the new Terminator did a pretty good job.
Tom:
She did a pretty good job. You didn't know for sure if she was the one
who came back in time to kill John Connor or if Arnold came back to kill
him and it kept you guessing and it made sense. But it seemed like another
movie they made just to make money off of it. The storyline was no where
near as good as the first two movies.
OFG:
They definitely set it up for a 4th Terminator movie.
Theo:
Hopefully not.
OFG:
We got lost going to your show in Jacksonville back in March. Do you ever
get lost driving in the states?
Theo:
We find that anywhere we are at in the United States even if it's five
minutes away from where it's at people don't know where it is. If it's
around the corner or down the street we usually find it ourselves. I find
that Americans generally don't have a good sense of direction. Maybe it's
just me asking the wrong people all the time.
Tom:
Geographically speaking, we know Canada really well and we know the United
States well, but if you ask an American something about Canada as if they
would care right? Why would they care? I did a test with someone about
American States and I knew more about the State Capitals than some Americans
do.
OFG:
Well, Im still getting use to Orlando. (Laughs) I still get lost.
Theo:
Do you live here now?
OFG:
Yes.
OFG:
What's the best about being in a band?
Theo:
Getting head from some fawking guy. (Laughs) (Editor's note: In addition
to being an excellent guitarist Theo is one of the funniest persons I
have ever met.) Just kidding ... Traveling that's fun.
OFG:
Have you been to Europe yet?
Tom:
We actually had a tour set up, but didn't end up doing it. So we went
backpacking for a couple of weeks to Amsterdam.
OFG:
Isn't Marijuana legal there?
Tom:
Actually it's not legal there and not even decriminalized, but it's tolerated.
It's decriminalized in Belgium.
OFG:
If you weren't musicians what would you do?
Tom:
Maybe teach English in a country like Korea.
Theo:
Hmmmm, I don't know. Maybe be a movie star. (Laughs)
Tom:
Yeah, Theo would probably get into the Film Industry. Something like that.
I'd lke to make movies. I don't know if I will. I hope too.
Tom:
Today is Theo's Birthday.
OFG:
Happy Birthday Theo how old are you?
Theo:
I'm 25.
OFG:
Tom how old are you?
Tom:
I'm 26.
OFG:
Thank you for your time I wish you much success (Editor's Note: At this
point Tom and Theo were clowning around making jokes and we basically
spent a few more minutes telling each other jokes.)
Theo:
Thanks for making us laugh.
OFG:
Your welcome. I kept you guys entertained?
Tom:
Yeah.
