Hoobastank with Letter Kills and Die Trying at Freebird Cafe in Jacksonville Beach, FL.

August 22, 2003

Usually when you spend fifteen dollars to see a concert you expect to see one good band. Tonight at the Freebird Cafe that was not the case. Patrons saw three great bands performing live. The bands blew the roof off the place.

The acoustics at Freebird Cafe are great. And at the Freebird, fans are able to get so close to the bands that they are able to high-five their favorite band member.

All of the bands at tonight's show went out of their way to have as much contact with fans as possible ... giving several fans a memory they will not forget.

One thing that impressed me about these bands was that following the show the bands were outside on the street talking to the fans, signing autographs and giving out bumper stickers.

Any up-and-
coming band could learn a thing or two about building a street team from these guys.

Letter Kills hails from Ternecula, CA and consists of Lead Singer Matt Shelton, Guitarists Timothy Cordova and Dustin Lovelis, Bassist Kyle Duckworth and Drummer Paul Remund.

Letter Kills hit the stage first and within seconds they set the tone for the night with a remarkable set that included their song Don't Believe in Me.

Matt was dancing and jumping all over stage at an energy level that was unbelievable.

Especially considering the band had just drove non-stop for 18 hours in a van to get to the show.

His band mates were equally impressive.

The show flowed so well that I can't believe they have only been together for a little over a year. This is a band that has a bright future.

Letter Kills recently signed with Island Records. Expect an album from them soon. I'm sure that the audience tonight can't wait for it's release. Put me at the front of the line when the CD hits the shelves.

Die Trying - After fixing some technical difficulties with Jack's guitar, Die Trying took over the stage at the Freebird Cafe and kicked into overdrive. The intensity level was raised to the stratosphere when Jassen jumped into the crowd and sang almost an entire song.

The Freebird Cafe exploded with excitement and the crowd went into a frenzy ... high-fiving and singing with him.

Another gem of the show was when they played their hit single, Oxygen's Gone. The song sounds great on the album, but wait until you hear it live. It will take you to another world!

Die Trying poured their hearts out. They played an outstanding set and it showed how much this band loves to perform. Have you ever heard the saying, "Born to perform live?" Well, I'd love to stay away from that cliché, but that saying fits the description for this band. These guys live to play in front of a live audience.

Hoobastank - Treated the sold out crowd to over an hour of their music featuring songs from their untitled new album due out in May 2008.

They started the show off with a bang, playing the song "Pieces" from their self titled debut CD "Hoobastank."

Hoobastank stepped it up a notch with an emotional version of their hit single, "Running Away." Doug Robb, the lead singer of Hoobastank was singing this song from his heart.

One of the unique moments of the show was when Doug asked fans to turn on their cell phones to light up the Freebird Cafe in a sea of cell phones. I've seen a hell of a lot of concerts and this was the first time I've ever seen a parade of cell phones like that. Forget the bic lighters at a Hoobastank concert. Bring a cell phone instead.

Doug was one of the more personable lead singers that I've seen, making constant eye contact with the crowd. When fans tried to high-five him. He responded time-after-time.

When the band played "Out of Control," the soon to be released single, it sent shivers of excitement up and down my spine and I can't wait to hear it on the radio.

Hoobastank ended the show with a extraordinary version of their song "Remember Me."

Bassist Markku Lappalainen, Guitarist Dan Estrin and Drummer Chris Hesse played with a lot of fire. And Doug Robb's cutting-edge vocals give this band a sound that few can match. Great as their music sounds in your CD player. Hoobastank is a band you have to see live to appreciate how talented they are.

If tonight's show is a gauge of Hoobastank, then we believe that their upcoming CD is going to be one of the must buy CD's of the year.
