Journey
- Red 13 Review

Journey's Red 13 a 4-song EP that was released late 2002, delivers their
classic melodic rock with a new edge from an electronic intro to a more
modern guitar sound.
Steve
Augeri supplies the distinguishing high vocals that he demonstrated
on their Armageddon soundtrack and the 2001 Arrival album. He is still
associated by die-hards Journey fans with Steve Perry, the former lead
singer, which he graciously accepts as a compliment.
Throughout
the CD is a darker message. Journey sounds like a progression from purgatory
to rebirth. From pain to renewal - as in the chosen lyrics below, representative
of each of these songs:
Red
13 is reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon,"
with Neal Schon jamming with Jonathan Cain's Triton-like keyboard sequence,
the song builds to an intensity of solid drums and guitar with an intoxicating
melody in State of Grace. "I search for the truth in these desperate
days / I live to be touched by your state of grace". The Time "Love's
gonna come around / all we need is the time," returns to Journey's
traditional high-school-prom sounds, with 3 and 4 part harmonies. Walkin'
Away From the Edge - "I turned around before it was too late,"
is another patented Journey waltzy ballad, carried by Cain's grand piano.
I Can Breathe - "I'm ready to try again / I'm alive again / I can
breathe," gains strength with Chicago-like horn lines and ends
with a sing-along chorus.
To
sum it up, the combination of Neil's powerful Les Paul guitar, Jonathan's
expressive keyboard, Ross with his driving bass lines, Deen's masterful
timing and Steve's mesmerizing vocals makes this a CD that any Journey
fan a must buy.
We're
covering the Journey concert tomorrow night at Hard
Rock Live. We can't wait to see them live.
