Interview with Tony Campos of Static-X at Gauveween in Tampa, FL
Tony: Basically what happens is when we're ready to go out on tour our booking agent puts the word out to promoters and radio stations across the country. Saying, "Static-X is looking to tour." From there people make offers, they'll say, "Hey we have this show and we want you to play," and that's how we got hooked up with Gauveween. OFG: Earlier this year I covered an outdoor show in St. Petersburg, FL. Static-X played with Staind and Lo Pro. It was really hot out that night. How hard was it for you to perform and what do you have to do to prepare yourself to play in that kind of heat? Tony: Just get out there a little earlier and get use to being in that kind of climate. It's not like you walk out of the dressing room or tour bus and your like wow. You have to get acclimated to the heat and humidity. OFG: You have a new album out what's the name of it? Tony: "Shadow Zone." OFG: What's your favorite song off the album? Tony: I'd have to say the first track. 'Destroy All.' It's really heavy. OFG: When you have a day off in between shows what do you normally do? Tony: Depending on what city we're in. If there's a good mall, I'll go to the mall and spend money I shouldn't be spending. Buy crap we don't need. Go out to dinner. We go to the movies and the mall. We'll sit at the hotel and watch TV and play video games. Last day off we had I saw 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre.' OFG: What did you think of that movie? Tony: I liked it. It wasn't the original. It was good. Getting to see Jessica Biel running around in that nice little top. Now that for me was worth the price of admission. Ya know? (Laughs.) OFG: What are some of your favorite video games? Tony: Oh don't get me started with that. I was a big fan of the first Halo game. I'm still waiting for 'Halo 2' to come out. That came out what? A year and a half. They keep pushing the release date back on it so I don't know. That was an awesome game I spent a whole tour playing the first Halo game. I finished the game three times. OFG: Hardcore right now is pretty popular. Do you think it's will continue to prosper and grow? Tony: What do you mean by Hardcore? OFG: Hardcore punk or Nu-metal. Tony: Now you're opening up whole another can of worms here. What people consider punk these days is different from what I call punk, I grew up listening to hardcore punk bands like DRI, Corrosion Conformity, Cryptic Slaughter really hardcore stuff. Nowadays bands like Blink-182 and Good Charlotte that look punk but they're playing pop music. I take issue with people who call themselves punk when it's pop music in a punk rock wrapper. You know? As far as the whole heavy music scene it's definitely gotten to the point where it's sneaking into the main stream and that can only be a good thing. The more widespread it gets the better it will be for all the bands out there trying to do this. OFG: We get hardcore punk records sent to all the time and I don't recall getting a bad one, Hopefully the scene will continue to grow and prosper. Do you think the hardcore scene has reached it's peak? Tony: Music is very Silastic. It has the big breakout stage and it becomes popular and you have two million bands doing the same thing. It will get to the point that so many bands are doing it. A perfect example is Gun N' Roses. When they were huge they were the biggest thing. Then ten million bands started sounding like them. It took something like Nirvana to come out and restart the whole cycle. It's starting to get that point with the whole "Nu-metal" thing. So far all the bands are putting out good stuff. It hasn't got to that rehash point yet. OFG: What are some of your favorite Nu-metal bands? Tony: Nu-Metal bands? oh, I'd have to say Sevendust would probably be at the time of my list. They're amazing. I've been a fan of theirs for years. OFG: I hate to categorize music. To me it's rock. You don't have to be a fan of Nu-metal to enjoy the show just like seeing a good concert. Tony: Right. OFG: Where do you see Static-X five years from now? Tony: I don't know. I haven't thought that far ahead. Hopefully we're still out doing shows and making music. Still having fun. That's what I'm looking for. OFG: Do you have any favorite venues you like to play? Tony:
House of Blues in Orlando, FL. That's always a great show. OFG: Does Static-X have a street team? Tony: Yes, we do. To join go to our website Static-X.com and there's a link on the website that will take you to the street team. You can also email us from our website. OFG: Do you have anything you would like to say to the fans of Static-x? Tony: Thank you for your continued support. We'll keep putting out music and touring our asses off. OFG: Tony thank you very much I wish you much success. Tony:
Thank you. By
