Chubby Checker Makes Rock and Roll History Again - Like He Did Last Millennium!

His Current Rise to Number 3 on Billboard's Hot Dance Singles Sales Chart Demonstrates the World's First Platinum Recording Artist is a Hotter Commodity Than Ever

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ - Looks like everyone's sweatin' to the "oldies," as witnessed by Chubby Checker's meteoric debut at the top of the charts. His latest single, "Limbo Rock (Remixes)" (Teec), is credited to Chubby C &OD featuring Inner Circle. Chubby C is of course the latest incarnation of Chubby Checker. Once again Checker's inimitable style gets the party mov'n in a way that makes you want to get up and dance. He definitely has that special something which has kept him on the Billboard Record Charts for the past 44 years, 7 months and counting. Chubby's in fine company this week on the Billboard Dance Chart and he shares the spotlight with two other rock icons. Chubby Checker, Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones are all in the top 5. Chubby is up to #3 and also comes in at #9 on the Billboard Hot R&R/Hip-Hop Singles Sales Chart.

From the time Elvis went into the Army until the Beatles arrived on these shores, no one had a better batting average than Chubby Checker. He sold 250,000,000 records during those 4 1/2 years. It is not surprising that Dick Clark said, "The three most important things that ever happened in the music industry are Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Chubby Checker." His latest 10 track Maxi Single features "The Original Master of the Dance Hall Beat" which is being played at contemporary radio stations with the other A side, "The Limbo Rock/Do The Limbo Rock," played at the largest Oldies stations in the country.

The new record was produced by the Hill & HiFi, a.k.a. Gary Lefkowith and Mike Rogers, and features the rap duo OD along with the original Bad Boys of Reggae, Inner Circle. Entering the Billboard chart's Top 100 Singles at 49, the CD is now up to 29! This new CD is Checker's 33rd charting single on the top 100 and his 24th record to become a top 40 hit. This record is also his 10th double-sided hit, a feat no other recording artist has ever achieved.

Chubby Checker is the King of the Twist. His breakout single "The Twist" was the only record to reach number one twice in its glory (once in 1960 and again in 1962), so Checker can now boast some other numbers that define his staying power. When Checker made history in November 1959 when the revolutionary concept of "dancing apart to the beat" was premiered to the vast teen-age audience of American Bandstand, who would have thought he'd still be doing what he does so well, adding pop, rap and reggae sounds to his lively and long-standing repertoire? Just a little more history is that Checker, born Ernest Evans 62 years ago in Andrews, South Carolina and moved to Philadelphia when he was 10, made his debut on the Hot 100 the week of May 15,1959 with "The Class," a novelty recording that featured him impersonating well-known artists such as Fats Domino, the Coasters and Elvis Presley.

The advent of Chubby Checker turned the world into dancing maniacs and we're all still grooving to his sounds. Clearly his music is loved and respected, and to this day, his worldwide tours have audiences of all ages dancing in the aisles. This newest coup in his 40+ year share of history and pop culture is perhaps the most significant because it sends a message that age and age-appropriateness are all relative, real talent and fame are never-ending and judging by his infectious smile, sparkly eyes, charming personality and unwrinkled face -- and also the way he fits into his skintight jeans -- we all wish we could be a little more like Chubby!
