Digital 5 and Napster Partner to Bring Napster 2.0's Premium Music Service to the Living Room via Connected Consumer Electronics Devices SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 7, 2004 (PRNewswire) - Digital 5(TM), Inc. announced today a demonstration of StreamRite(TM) QoS and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) software powered technology with Napster, the most recognized brand in digital music. Digital 5 and Napster, a division of Roxio (NASDAQ:ROXI) , have partnered to enable users of Napster's Premium service to access the online music leader's immense catalog of over half a million tracks through connected DVD players and other similar consumer electronic devices powered by Digital 5, Inc. This partnership combines the compelling features of Napster Premium, such as unlimited listening to the world's largest catalog of digital music, with the capability of networked devices to allow consumers to easily enjoy their music through their entertainment center. "The consumer response to Napster 2.0 has been extremely positive," said Bill Pence, Chief Technology Officer, Napster. "Delivering Napster's massive catalog of music to the living room through modestly priced, connected consumer electronic devices further realizes our goal of combining the accessibility of online music with the ability to listen to that music in traditional settings throughout the home. This is a major stride forward that will continue to drive adoption of Napster's Premium service." The Digital 5 middleware for connected consumer electronics powers connected DVD products from major OEMs such as Gateway(TM) and Go-Video(TM), as well as connected audio clients to be released in early 2004. These networked consumer electronics products enable the consumer to stream digital music from their personal music libraries as well as from content services over their existing home networks using UPnP technology, a new standard backed by Intel and others. The connected DVDs also allow display of digital photos and video from their consumers' PCs as well. "Digital 5 is pleased to partner with Napster to bring content services to the Digital 5 powered devices," said Mike Harris, Chief Technology Officer, Digital 5, Inc. "We feel that support for subscription content services on connected devices is critical for the adoption of this new consumer electronics product category." Napster 2.0 raises the bar for online music. It enables fans to legally and freely sample the world's largest and most diverse online collection of music, featuring over half a million songs. The revolutionary, easy-to-use interface allows users to quickly and easily download tracks, transfer songs to portable devices or burn them to CDs for just 99 cents per track or $9.95 per album. In addition to the free online magazine, Billboard charts, music videos, song clips and the ability to email tracks to friends and browse other members' collections, serious music fans have the added option to upgrade to a premium service that offers unlimited listening and downloading, over 40 commercial-free radio stations and a collection of interactive play lists and community features, all for just $9.95 a month. The ability to stream music from the Napster 2.0 premium music service to Digital 5 connected devices is being demonstrated by Digital 5 and Napster at the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Neither Digital 5 nor Napster have announced when and if this technology will be available in a released product. |
