Osceola
Heritage Park is Working with the Community to Benefit Students.
February
3, 2004
Osceola Heritage Park and Gateway High School jointly announced that
they are working hand and hand in a unique School-to-Work Business Partnership.
Gateway High School students are working on special projects at Osceola
Heritage Park to enhance confidence and self-esteem, and as a result,
will become active participants in the local community.
By working closely with Osceola Heritage Park, these students develop
academically by taking what they are learning in the classroom and applying
it to various tasks provided in a real world setting. "We at SMG
and Osceola Heritage Park are proud to be part of this vital program
to assist our communities' youth," said Don Miers, GM at Osceola
Heritage Park. This partnership offers the students exposure to a variety
of community events through their participation in the behind the scenes
preparations of the entertainment industry. Lorren Harbin, Chair and
Teacher of Exceptional Student Education said, "This is a great
opportunity for the students of Gateway High School. They get the chance
to gain valuable experience and fulfill their career education credit."
After research and preparations the program approval and agreement to
oversee the partnership was granted by Penny Collins, Director of Exceptional
Student Education, Osceola District School, and William James, Principal
of Gateway High School.
Currently there are 11 students in the program. The first class began
last week and will run through mid May. The program will resume in August
and run through the end of the school year. This is the first program
in Central Florida to focus on inner workings in the entertainment industry.
Similar programs are: Gateway Wings program at the Orlando International
Airport and the Score Program, which students work with the Kissimmee
community restaurants and retail stores.
