6th Annual Palm Beach International Film Festival Announces Film Line-Up for April 2001 Event

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 2001--

Seven-day Celebration of World Cinema To Showcase The Best In U.S. and International Film And Honor Actress Leslie Caron, Director Jean Becker and Palm Beach County Commissioner Burt A. Aaronson, PBIFF Founder

Boasting more than 55 feature and documentary film programs from 17 countries, including 17 premieres and three official Oscar submissions; five retrospective films; and a special showcase of more than 20 films in salute to French cinema, the film line-up was unveiled today for the sixth annual Palm Beach International Film Festival scheduled for April 19-26, 2001.

The announcement was made by PBIFF Artistic Director Mark Diamond who has held that position since the film festival's inception in 1996.

According to Diamond, more than half of the 2001 PBIFF's featured films have been selected from international markets, including Austria, Germany, Venezuela, Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa, Iran, the Republic of Croacia and China. A majority of the screenings will be introduced and hosted by the filmmakers themselves.

In addition, the 2001 PBIFF will honor actress Leslie Caron with the 2001 PBIFF International Lifetime Achievement Award, French Director Jean Becker with the 2001 PBIFF Film Excellence Award-Director and Palm Beach County Commissioner Burt Aaronson, PBIFF founder, with a newly created Commissioner Burt A. Aaronson Founder's Award. Presentations will be made at the PBIFF Gala Awards Show, Saturday evening, April 21, 2001 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach that will also feature a concert performance by entertainer Gregory Hines.

Directed by Michael Corrente, who will be attending with his wife/actress Libby Langdon; Film cast includes Robert Duval and Michael Keaton.

-- Bread & Roses (Switzerland/Germany/Spain/France/United Kingdom) Director: Ken Loach whose previous films have included "Hidden Agenda," "Ladybird," "Land and Freedom," "Carla's Song," "My Name is Joe."

-- The Day I Became A Woman (Iran) Director: Marziyeh Meshkini, this is an Iranian film that will be part of an acclaimed series presented by The Shooting Gallery.

-- Enlightenment Guaranteed (Germany) Director: Acclaimed German Director Doris Dorre whose previous films include "Men" and "Am I Beautiful." The film is the winner of the prestigious Bavarian Film Awards (German Academy Awards) for Best Picture and Best Actor.

-- Les Enfants du Marais (The Children of the Marshland) Director: Jean Becker, the 2001 PBIFF Film Excellence Award-Director, who will be in attendance to host this film that won an Audience Award at the 1999 Catalonian International Film Festival and was nominated for a Cesar Award for Best Director.

-- A Trial In Prague (USA) Director: Emmy Award Winner Zuzanna Justman

-- Special Film Showcase Salute To French Cinema

-- A selection of more than 20 films highlighting French cinema--presented in conjunction with The Children of The French Cinema--that will include a retrospective tribute to Jacques Becker.

Film screenings will be held exclusively at the official PBIFF theater sites of Muvico Parisian 20 at CityPlace/West Palm Beach at 545 Hibiscus Street and Muvico Palace 20/Boca Raton off Glades Road at I-95 at 3200 Airport Road.

Each year the PBIFF celebrates both the history and future of the film industry with seven days of premieres, special events, feature and short films, documentaries, an industry panel, an acclaimed student film competition and showcase of student films, and gala awards show.
