VETERAN BROADCAST TEAM TO LEAD 2003 SPEED CHANNEL BROADCASTS OF CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES EVENTS
INDIANAPOLIS (February 18, 2003) - The teams and drivers of the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford strive for continuity from season to season, as the ability to keep the same lineup intact often results in better performances.
That mindset is not exclusive to the teams however as SPEED Channel returns for its second year as the cable home of the Champ Car World Series, bringing back the same talent lineup that carried the action of the 2002 season to households throughout North America.
SPEED Channel will cover 12 races in 2003, but will carry live Saturday qualifying action from 18 of the season's 19 events. In addition to the qualifying and race-day shows, the motorsports network will broadcast a 30-minute pre-race show for each of their 12 events.
"This season will be a lot of fun for SPEED Channel," said Doug Sellars, SPEED Channel VP/Executive Producer, Remote Production. "The Champ Car World Series has a new look and plenty of fresh faces, giving SPEED Channel a lot of ground to cover for our viewers. We will be back with our signature Visor Cam and Shifter Cam and we look forward to putting on a great show."
The broadcast lineup remains the same with veteran Bob Varsha returning to handle the play-by-play duties with former Trans-Am champion Tommy Kendall and Trans-Am and Champ Car driver Scott Pruett serving as analysts. Ace pit reporters Derek Daly and Calvin Fish will be prowling Pit Lane during events to bring viewers the news as it happens, talking to the people making the decisions with the various teams.
"There is a great mix of veterans and fast rookies, plus interesting new faces on the pit wall such as Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Gentilozzi," said Varsha. "The cars are as fast as or faster than last year with that great Champ Car sound. And the events are second to none, from Long Beach to Montreal to Mexico, Europe and Australia. There is simply no greater challenge in racing than the mix of circuits that the Champ Cars visit and I can't wait to get started on the harbor front at St.Petersburg."
SPEED Channel's coverage gets underway with the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg beginning Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET with live, final-day qualifying, followed by Sunday's live race coverage beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. SPEED Channel also will broadcast the Trans-Am Series race from St. Petersburg at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
SPEED Channel, the nation's fastest growing sports cable network, is the first and only 24-hour cable network devoted exclusively to motor sports and the human fascination for speed. Currently seen in more than 55.8 million U.S homes and 4.5 million more in Canada, SPEED Channel was acquired by Fox Cable Networks Group in July 2001.
