LIGHT WEEK FOR SEALS!

February 2, 2004

(20-10-2 42 Points, 2nd in WHA2)

One Road Game: The Orlando Seals who just completed a stretch of seven games in nine days have only one game this week and only two games in nine days. The Seals will visit the Miami Manatees on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The game will be available on www.IRN.FM. The Seals next home game is Tuesday February 10th against the Miami Manatees at 7:05 p.m.

Moving Back Up: The Seals used a three game winning streak to move back into second place. After a 3-2 shootout win last Wednesday against the Macon Trax, the Seals defeated the Lakeland Loggerheads, 5-4 in regulation time on Friday night, then won in Lakeland 4-3 in a shootout. The winning streak came to an end when the Seals dropped a 5-2 decision to Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon.

B.J. Vu: Saturday’s win at Lakeland was eerily similar to the game there exactly one month earlier. The Seals had a 3-0 lead, only to have to win the game in the shootout. In both games, B.J. Stephens had the only shootout goal for either team. Stephens now leads the Seals in goals (22) assists (23) and points (45).

LiPuma On Stage: It’s not quite Phantom of the Opera, but Seals defenseman and player assistant coach Chris LiPuma will be the guest of the WHA2 Sportstalk Live show at the ESPN Club at the Disney Boardwalk on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Got Tickets?: Seals tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com. Ticket information is available by calling the Seals at (407) 447-PUCK (7825).

Seals 4, Loggerheads 3 SO

February 1, 2004

Lakeland, FL – B.J. Stephens had the game-winning goal in the shootout to lift the Orlando Seals to a 4-3 victory Saturday night at the Lakeland Center. Jamie Muswagon and Mike Sanderson each had two points for the Seals in the club’s third straight victory.

Orlando saw a three-goal lead evaporate in the second period, as Lakeland scored three unanswered goals to tie the game after two. The Seals only mustered a season-low 14 shots on Lakeland goaltender Tyler Murray through regulation and overtime.

B.J. Stephens put the Seals on the board on a 2-on-1 play just 2 minutes, 4 seconds into the game. Mike Sanderson connected with Stephens who buried the puck behind Murray for his team-leading 21st goal of the season. Jamie Muswagon was credited with the second assist on the play.

Sanderson added a goal of his own just 1:34 later for a 2-0 Seals lead.

The Seals pulled ahead 3-0 at the 18:00 mark of the first period on Brad Federenko’s power play tally. Mark White’s shot from the point through traffic was tipped by Federenko past Murray for his 16th of the season.

Lakeland charged back in the second period, scoring 3 goals on 14 shots and holding the Seals to only three shots. Jim Callahan’s first of two on the night at 9:48 made it 3-1 as he slid the puck under Mike Correia’s pads after the Seals failed to clear the zone.

Mark Loza’s first of the season made it 3-2 before Callahan’s second of the game tied the contest 3-3.

In the shootout, Mike Correia was injured as he made the save on Lakeland’s second shooter, Chris Harper. David Goverde was forced to come into the game without a warm-up to face the third Lakeland shooter. Goverde kept Callahan at bay to preserve the victory for Correia.

The Seals return home for a matinee game Sunday against the Jacksonville Barracudas at 1:05 p.m. Fans sporting any NFL team apparel will receive a FREE ticket for every ticket they purchase.

Sign Muswagon, Urbanik Leaves Team

Getting ready for a stretch of six regular season games, plus the WHA2 all-star game in nine days Orlando Seals head coach Jim Paek has made some roster adjustments.

The Seals have signed left winger Jamie Muswagon, who had nine goals and 18 assists for 17 points in 21 games for the Cape Fear Fire Antz (where Seals defenseman Mike Fournier began the season) this season. The Seals are able to sign Muswagon as right winger Joe Urbanik left the team for personal reasons. He had six goals and four assists for 10 points in 26 games for the Seals.

“It’s hard to judge on first appearance, but Jamie looks pretty good out there, like he can really help us out,” Paek said after watching Muswagon’s first practice with the Seals on Friday.

The Seals also made other roster moves on Friday, activating Joe Pecoraro from the injured reserve list. Slammers 5, Seals 3

January 17, 2004

Orlando – Alabama goaltender Jamie Ronayne made 52 saves to lift the Alabama Slammers to a 5-3 win over the Orlando Seals Saturday night at the TD Waterhouse Centre. Jason Elders was the high scorer for the Seals with 2 points (1g, 1 a).

Elders gave Orlando a 1-0 lead 2:25 into the game, batting home the rebound off a Brad Federenko shot. Federenko chipped the puck on goal after being tripped in front of the net. Elders collected the loose puck for his 13th goal of the season.

B.J. Stephens made it 2-0 for the Seals just over 3 minutes later when he backhanded a shot from the top of the crease past Ronayne for his team-leading 19th goal of the season.

Alabama came storming back in the second half of the first, getting goals from Chad Peck and Jeff Coulter to send the teams into intermission tied 2-2.

In the second frame, the Slammers took a 3-2 lead on Doug Lawrence’s 16th of the season 6 minutes, 4 seconds into the period.

Joe Urbanik tied the game for Orlando on the power play, deflecting Mike Fournier’s slapper from the point at 9:33 of the second. It was the second goal in as many games for the Seals forward, who snapped a five-game goal-scoring drought Thursday against Lakeland.

Alabama countered once again to reclaim the lead at 13:04 of the middle frame. Ryan Prentice wristed a shot through the five-hole after an Orlando defensive-end turnover for his team-leading 18th goal of the season. Alabama carried the 4-3 lead into the locker room, despite being out-shot 16-9 in the period.

The Seals could not muster another goal, even with a 55-34 edge in shots, the highest shot total this season for Orlando, topping Thursday’s 54-shot performance against Lakeland.

The Seals are off for an entire week before hitting the road for a game in Miami Saturday and then in Jacksonville on Sunday. Orlando returns to home ice Wednesday, January 28, for a 7:05 faceoff with the Macon Trax. All Seals game can be heard at www.IRN.FM.

SHOTS GALORE: SEAL ORLANDO VICTORY
BJ Stephens Nets 2 in Victory

January 15, 2003

Orlando – The Orlando Seals drilled a season-high 54 shots on goal in Thursday’s 4-1 win over the Lakeland Loggerheads. The Seals improve to 17-6-2 on the season, good for second place in the WHA2.

Joe Urbanik got things rolling for the Seals with his 5th goal of the season, a wrist shot high to the glove side of Lakeland goaltender Tyler Murray, at 7:09 of the first period. B.J. Stephens’ first of two on the night made it 2-0 at 11:30 of the same frame.

Stephens opened the second period with his second tally of the game to make it 3-0 Orlando. The Seals winger drove hard into the Lakeland zone for a shorthanded bid but was denied by Murray. Just as the penalty ended, Stephens regained control behind the net and flipped a pass to Brad Federenko in the right wing circle. Federenko hit Ryan Anderson in the slot, who chipped a backhand pass back to Stephens on the doorstep for his 18th goal of the season.

Seals fans thought they had a 4-0 game later in the second when Seamus Galligan drilled a slapshot past Murray from just inside the Lakeland blue line. Referee Mike Hughes ruled no goal, citing the whistle had blown on a delayed penalty call.

Federenko added a goal of his own in the third period, a strange bounce behind the Lakeland net that caught Murray looking the other way, for a 4-0 Seals lead.

Lakeland’s Rob Schweyer snapped David Goverde’s shutout late in the third but that was all the Loggerheads could muster as they drop to 4-18-4 on the season.

The Seals rev up their engines again on Saturday, January 17 for NASCAR Night at the TD Waterhouse Centre when the Seals host the Alabama Slammers at 7:35 pm. There will be a number of NASCAR giveaways, including a Kyle Petty autographed jersey, courtesy of Cycle Rider Radio. SEALS RUN OUT OF GAS IN 4-GAME STRETCH
Lakeland Tallies First Road Win in Franchise History

January 11, 2004

Orlando – Brad Federenko scored his 13th goal of the season but it was all the Seal could muster as they fell to the Lakeland Loggerheads 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the TD Waterhouse Centre.

The game was the fourth in four days for Orlando (16-6-2), who went 2-2 in that span. The victory was Lakeland’s first on the road and only their 4th overall, as they improve to 4-17-4.

Lakeland opened up the scoring late in the first period on a power play tally from Jeremy Vokes at 19:10. Curtis Sayler added another for the Loggerheads at 5:33 of the second for a 2-0 Lakeland lead. Vokes added an assist on the tally to give him a game-high 2 points.

The Seals began a rally late in the second when B.J. Stephens slid a pass from behind the net to a streaking Federenko in the slot, who rifled a slapshot past Lakeland goaltender Tyler Murray for a 2-1 game. Orlando had several scoring opportunities in the third but was unable to capitalize, hitting the post twice in that span.

The Seals look to avenge their loss this Thursday, January 15 when Lakeland returns to the TD Waterhouse Centre for a 7:05 pm start. All Seals games can be heard live at www.IRN.FM.

January 10, 2004

Mike Correia posted his second shutout of the season for a 3-1-1 record.

After a scoreless first period, defenseman Mike Fournier gave Orlando the lead at 2:10 of the second with his first goal of the season. Lakeland’s Gilbert Dionne turned over the puck to Fournier who teed up a slapshot low to the stick side of Carl Poissant to put Orlando up 1-0.

Jason Elders put the Seals up 2-0 just 1 minute, 34 seconds later with his 11th goal of the season from Brad Federenko and Ryan Anderson. Tyler Murray replaced Poissant in net for the Loggerheads following Elders’ goal but the goaltending change did nothing to stop the Seals barrage.

CAMPANA RELEASE EXPECTED WEDNESDAY

December 23, 2003

Recovery Proceeding Smoothly

Orlando Seals left winger Adam Campana could be released from the hospital on Wednesday, after removal of a blood clot on his lung Sunday night.

His recovery is proceeding smoothly, and doctors at Florida Hospital removed a breathing tube from his chest on Tuesday afternoon. The 6-foot, 170 pound rookie from Clarkson University suffered shortness of breath after the Seals 3-2 victory over the Jacksonville Barracudas Saturday night.

He admitted himself to Florida Hospital where doctors discovered internal bleeding, but couldn’t identify the source. An exploratory surgery revealed the blood clot, which was removed and the internal bleeding stopped.

“The hospital staff and the booster club members have all been great,” Campana said. His parents flew to Orlando from Boston and echoed their son’s sentiments about the doctors, the Florida Hospital staff, and the Seals booster club.

While Campana is expected to be released from the hospital on Wednesday, his return to the ice for the Seals is at least six to eight weeks away.

“The main thing is that Adam is getting better and having a speedy recovery, from a pretty scary situation,” Seals coach Jim Paek said. “He’s such a class young man, the most important thing is he gets healthy before we think about him resuming his playing hockey. We’re all just thankful he is going to be o.k.”

Campana, who turned 24 last Friday, has two goals and three assists in 15 games for the Seals.

The Seals host Jacksonville again on Friday at 7:35 p.m. It is a Cheap Guys Computer Family Four Pack night with a special offer of four tickets, four hot dogs, four soft drinks, and four Seals hats all for only $52. Fans can also bring any holiday gift they wish to exchange for a buy one, get one free ticket offer, and the chance to exchange their “awful gift” for someone else’s “awful gift”, showing indeed one person’s junk is another’s treasure.

He scored a goal in all three games last week, and with goals in four straight games, now has the longest current goal streak in the league. The second longest streak belongs to his teammate B.J. Stephens who has goals in three straight games for the Seals.

NHL Watch Party: The Seals will gather at the Thirsty Whale on Kirkman Road Wednesday night at 8 o’clock for an NHL watch party. Fans who attend can vote on which NHL game they would like to see. During intermissions, there will be contests and prizes for fans.

Got Tickets?: Seals tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com. Ticket information is available by calling the Seals at (407) 447-PUCK (7825).

Fellini To Re-Join Staff

Joe Fellini is set to re join the Seals staff full time, as of December 1st. For the past several months Fellini has worked with the league office of WHA2 helping teams get off the ground with their operations.

Jacksonville is set to play its first game in the new arena for the Barracudas this Saturday, allowing Fellini to return to the Seals. He will concentrate on group ticket sales and corporate partnerships.

“I’m looking forward to re-joining the Seals and renewing all the friendships I’ve made over my years with Orlando hockey teams,” Fellini said. “Having a chance to go around and see what all the teams are doing, it’s an exciting thing to be a part of in WHA2. Now I can concentrate on helping keep the Seals a top notch entertainment value.”
