Tampa Bay Buccaneers

BUCCANEERS PLACE FB ALSTOTT ON INJURED RESERVE - ANNOUNCE SEVERAL OTHER MOVES

Tuesday, October 7, 2003

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today announced that they have placed FB Mike Alstott on injured reserve. In addition, the club claimed S Travaris Robinson off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. Tampa Bay also agreed to terms on two-year contracts with LB Vinny Ciurciu and LB Justin Smith, and signed WR Charles Lee to a two-year deal.

To make room on the roster, the team released WR Marvin Minnis and DE Ron Warner, and LB Jack Golden (waived – injured). RB Travis Stephens was signed to the practice squad.

“It’s unfortunate that I suffered an injury and will be unable to help my teammates defend another championship this year,” said Alstott. “I am going to turn all of my attention to getting better, and the doctors and everyone that I have consulted with, fully expect me to be back in a Buccaneer uniform next season. I truly appreciate all of the support and encouragement from our fans.”

“This is a terrible blow to our football team,” said Bucs head coach Jon Gruden. “Mike Alstott is a great leader and a great player. We are counting on him coming back even better next year. We will miss him, but we have to step up.”

Alstott, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, is Tampa Bay’s all-time leader with 59 career touchdowns and 47 career rushing touchdowns. He is the team’s all-time leader in scoring among non-kickers with 358 career points and his 4,607 rushing yards rank second all-time in team history.

Alstott played in all four games with three starts in 2003. The eighth-year player from Purdue totaled 27 rushing attempts for 77 yards and a team-best two rushing touchdowns, as well as 10 receptions for 83 yards. He originally entered the league as a second round pick (35th overall) of the Buccaneers in the 1996 NFL Draft.

Robinson was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Falcons on April 27, 2003 out of Auburn. He played in all five games for Atlanta in 2003 and totaled 11 tackles on defense.

Ciurciu was signed by Carolina as a college free agent from Boston College on May 2, 2003 before being released on August 31. He was then signed to Carolina’s practice squad on September 1.

Smith spent the 2003 training camp with Tampa Bay but was released on August 31 before being signed to the practice squad on September 2. Smith spent the majority of his first NFL season in 2002 on Tampa Bay’s practice roster.

Lee originally signed with Tampa Bay on May 22 and was released on August 31. He was signed to the 53-man roster on September 16 before being released on September 23. He saw action in one game for Tampa Bay in 2002.

Minnis was signed to the 53-man roster on September 23 after being released by Kansas City on August 31.

Warner, who also played with Tampa Bay in 2001 and 2002, signed a one-year deal with the Buccaneers on March 20. He saw action in three games in 2003.

Golden, who played in 13 regular season games and all three playoff contests last season, signed with Tampa Bay on May 12, 2003. Golden notched one tackle on defense and four special teams stops in 2003 for the Buccaneers.

Stephens, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2002 NFL Draft by Tampa Bay, saw action in one game in 2002 before being placed on injured reserve. He was released on August 31, 2003 and then was signed to Carolina’s practice squad.
