Tampa Bay Buccaneers

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2002

FB Mike Alstott

(On being selected to the Pro Bowl)
“Obviously, I’m very excited. As far as individual achievements, you always want to be selected by your peers, the coaches, and the fans. It’s a great award, but at the same time, I would like to play a week before that. It feels good, though. I just try to go out there and play hard. It’s great to be rewarded.”

(On the importance of the team’s success in getting voted into the Pro Bowl)
“When you have a lot of guys on your team making the Pro Bowl that always means your team is doing well. We’re winning and we are in the hunt for a Super Bowl championship and that’s what counts.”

(On being the only offensive player to be selected)
“Of course (I’m surprised). There are some guys that, offensively and defensively, that should have been rewarded also. It’s sad, but at the same time, we’ll look at the reward as a team achievement.”

(On which teammates he thinks should have been selected that weren’t)
“Obviously Brad (Johnson), Ronde (Barber), and there are some other guys. We have a big wide receiver corps that has done a lot of good things. We have some special teams guys that have gone down the field and have made some big plays, they could have been selected also.”

(On if whether or not the Pro Bowl selections get repetitive)
“No, no, not at all. You get to spend time with your family. And plus, you get to go out there and hang out with the guys from the other teams. It’s a first class operation out there, they take care of you, and it’s a time to get away. At the same time, you get to hang out with other guys and meet new people every year.”

LB Derrick Brooks

(On tying the franchise record at six consecutive Pro Bowl appearances)
“It means a lot. It just shows consistency in your play, and I thank God for it. Being able to stay at the top of your game for six years is huge. We all take it as a special achievement, but obviously we want to win that Super Bowl ring.”

(On looking forward to going to the Pro Bowl since injury did not allow him to play last year)
“Yes, I am. I never knew how much I missed the trip until you don’t go. Hopefully when we get through the end of this postseason we’re ready to play and go back over there. Obviously, at the same time, I still feel personally a couple of guys should have made it that didn’t. A lot of guys probably feel that about their teammates that didn’t make it. We thank you for it and hopefully, like I said, we can have another franchise first by winning the Super Bowl.”

(On a short flight from San Diego to Hawaii)
“It would be nice. I normally stop in California on my way. That would be big. It would be even bigger if we get there and we win it, not just play in it, but we definitely want to win it. The Pro Bowl is always a tremendous honor, and to continue to make it in consecutive years is topping on the cake.”

(On other Bucs getting left off due to the popularity vote)
“Yeah, you obviously feel that way. At the same time, there are probably a lot of other guys who feel that way about their teammates, too. Like I said, hopefully, we can go to the Super Bowl and make that consolation for everybody on the football team, so we feel like we did something together, so the ones that didn’t make it feel like they got something bigger with the Super Bowl Championship.”

S John Lynch

(On making the Pro Bowl)
“It’s always a great honor. I think the biggest thing it means to me is that the fans are involved and you appreciate that, and the coaches, but to be recognized by your own peers as the top at your position is a tremendous honor.”

(On Bucs players that did not make the Pro Bowl)
“You know, I think you always feel that way about your teammates, but particularly this year I felt like there were some guys on our team who’ve had Pro Bowl years who were left off. I’ve always said it’s not an exact science, it never will be, but there were some guys in particular, Ronde Barber, Brad Johnson, Brian Kelly, that really had Pro Bowl years and unfortunately won’t be going.”

(On what he likes most about the Pro Bowl experience)
“I think what I like most of all, like I said earlier, is the fact that you are being recognized by your peers as the top player at your position. I think we’ve got bigger fish to fry this year. It’s nice to make it (to the Pro Bowl), but there’s obviously other things that are much more important to this team. But it’s always nice.”

DE Simeon Rice

(On being selected to the Pro Bowl)
“I appreciate the fact that my play has been recognized. It’s unfortunate the other guys on the team have not gotten the praises and the just due that they need, in terms of the Brian Kelly’s, the Brad Johnson’s, the Ronde Barber’s. I think in the upcoming games we can hopefully address these issues and continue to win out.”

(On which teammates he thinks should have been selected that weren’t)
“Brian Kelly needs to be there. He is leading the league in interceptions. Ronde Barber, he should be on that list. You have guys that aren’t on that list that should be, and that’s unfortunate. I’ve been there so many times, but you need to get it when you can. I’m happy for myself, but overall it’s not right. I hope in time they can figure out a way to correct (the Pro Bowl) selection for the guys that should be going. I think Brad Johnson is our team’s MVP. He is one of the catalysts making this team go. Brian Kelly is having a phenomenal year, but he gets no press. Ronde Barber is having a great year. Things hopefully will change.”

QUOTE FROM BUCS DT WARREN SAPP
(On being selected to his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl, tying Lee Roy Selmon's club record)

“It's a big accomplishment. It really is. If you go over the laundry list of players that have done it for that number of years, the list dwindles when you talk about over five, six, seven years in a row where you're considered one of the best at what you do. It's really a hat off to each one of the guys that make it and each one of the guys that played well enough to make it and didn't make it. Ronde (Barber) and Brian (Kelly) had excellent years, and so did Brad Johnson at quarterback.”
