About Capriati and Sharapova Jennifer Capriati burst on the world tennis scene at the age of 13 and promptly became the youngest-ever player to reach a pro final in her first tournament and, at 14 years of age, the youngest player ever to be ranked in the Top 10. Fourteen years later and Capriati's rise, fall, and subsequent comeback remains one of the great sports stories. In 2001, she shocked the tennis world winning both the Australian Open and the French Open, a year in which she also became the Number One ranked player in the world. At the end of the year she was named the Female Athlete of the Year by both the Associated Press and Sports Illustrated. In 2002, she won the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete, and the 2002 Laureus Sports award for Female Athlete of the Year. She won the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
A relatively unknown at the start of 2003, Russian sensation Maria Sharapova has skyrocketed towards the top of womens tennis. Ranked outside the Top 100 a little over a year ago, she is currently at a career-high No. 7 in the world. In 2004 and at 17-years-of-age, Sharapova won Wimbledon in her first Grand Slam final. With this victory, she became the second youngest Wimbledon ladies champion in the Open era, after Martina Hingis, who was 16. Sharapova defeated current world No.1 Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals and the two-time defending Wimbledon champion Serena Williams in the final, 61 64. Since then, she has added two more WTA Tour titles in Seoul and Tokyo. About
