Women’s Tennis Association (WTA Tour) stars Maria Sharapova and Jennifer Capriati will serve it up during a special tennis exhibition on Saturday, December 18 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla. to raise money for the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.

In addition to a Sharapova v. Capriati singles match, the WTA Tour’s “Hurricane Tennis Slam” will feature special appearances by Governor Jeb Bush, local celebrities and a doubles match with many other top players on the professional women’s tennis tour.

“Many of the top women’s tennis players in the world live, train and play in Florida and the worldwide headquarters for the Women’s Tennis Association is in St. Petersburg. Our families, friends, neighbors and communities were all affected by this year’s unprecedented hurricane activity,” said WTA Tour CEO Larry Scott. “With the tremendous support of our partners, we are thrilled to bring the excitement of professional women’s tennis to the area in a way that also raises much-needed funds to help ongoing rebuilding efforts.”

“This is going to be a fun afternoon of exciting, entertaining tennis for our fans,” said world #7 and Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova. “Best of all, this is a great way for us to give back to the communities we call home. And I can think of no better time to do this than the holidays.”

Prior to the exhibition, the players will participate in a free Kids Tennis Clinic at the St. Petersburg Tennis Center on December 18 at 10:30a.m. The clinic will also feature renowned tennis instructor Nick Bolletieri of the famed Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Fla. and several of his up-and-coming tennis student stars.

About Capriati and Sharapova

Jennifer Capriati burst on the world tennis scene at the age of 13 and promptly became the youngest-ever player to reach a pro final in her first tournament and, at 14 years of age, the youngest player ever to be ranked in the Top 10. Fourteen years later and Capriati's rise, fall, and subsequent comeback remains one of the great sports stories. In 2001, she shocked the tennis world winning both the Australian Open and the French Open, a year in which she also became the Number One ranked player in the world. At the end of the year she was named the Female Athlete of the Year by both the Associated Press and Sports Illustrated. In 2002, she won the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete, and the 2002 Laureus Sports award for Female Athlete of the Year. She won the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

A relatively unknown at the start of 2003, Russian sensation Maria Sharapova has skyrocketed towards the top of women’s tennis. Ranked outside the Top 100 a little over a year ago, she is currently at a career-high No. 7 in the world. In 2004 and at 17-years-of-age, Sharapova won Wimbledon in her first Grand Slam final. With this victory, she became the second youngest Wimbledon ladies champion in the Open era, after Martina Hingis, who was 16. Sharapova defeated current world No.1 Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals and the two-time defending Wimbledon champion Serena Williams in the final, 61 64. Since then, she has added two more WTA Tour titles in Seoul and Tokyo.
